ST. PETERSBURG Kirk Gibson Jersey , Fla. (AP) — The Boston Red Sox had a lot of hits again. However, they couldn’t put them together to get a lot of scorng.Willy Adames homered, Michael Perez drove in four runs and the Tampa Bay Rays beat the Red Sox 10-3 Friday night for their sixth straight win.Boston finished with 13 hits, reaching double digits for the fourth time in five games.“We got all those hits, but they were spread around,” Boston manager Alex Cora said. “So it was a good night for them and a bad night for us.”Perez had a two-run double in the second and a two-run single in Tampa Bay’s five-run third. His four RBIs matched his total in his first 20 games. The Rays had six consecutive singles in the third against Hector Velazquez.“That’s how you win games — two outs and you start hitting base hits,” said Carlos Gomez, who had an RBI single in the big inning. “Right now we’re really hot, pitching and hitting.”Velazquez (7-2) gave up eight runs and nine hits in 2 2/3 innings to raise his earned run average from 2.74 to 3.69.“I was a bit unfortunate today,” he said. “They hit some ground balls that got through that usually don’t.”Ji-Man Choi and Adames scored in three straight innings for the Rays. Adames’ eighth home run off reliever Drew Pomeranz put the Rays up 10-2 in the fourth.Xander Bogaerts had three hits for the Red Sox, including an RBI single in the third that gave him 15 RBIs against Tampa Bay this season. The Boston shortstop is hitting .421 in his last 15 games.J.D. Martinez drove in his major league-leading 110th run of the season with a single in the fifth for the Red Sox, who went into the game with a 9 1/2-game lead in the AL East before losing for the fourth time in six games.Rookie Jalen Beeks, Boston’s minor league pitcher of the year last season before his trade to Tampa Bay for Nathan Eovaldi on July 25, won for the second time six days against his former team. Beeks (3-1) gave up three runs and seven hits in 5 1/3 innings in relief of starter Diego Castillo.“We got some hits off him but we didn’t score. That doesn’t usually happen with us,” said Andrew Benintendi, who had one of the hits.“We hit (Beeks) hard today. There were like six at bats that we hit blazers everywhere,” said Cora. “He spotted his fastball. That’s what we know about the kid. But to get Nathan Eovaldi, you’ve got to give up good players. … He made some pitches when he had to, but we hit him hard today.”SMITH IN HOSPITALRays OF Mallex Smith has been hospitalized for what is expected to be a short stay for treatment of a viral infection and is being placed on the 10-day disabled list. He received IV fluids and antibiotics. Smith, hitting .385 (25 for 65) in 16 games since being moved to the leadoff spot on Aug. 5, woke up feeling ill around 3 a.m. FridayTRAINER’S ROOMRed Sox: LHP Chris Sale (shoulder inflamation) might resume throwing as soon as this weekend. … RHP Steven Wright, out two months due to left knee inflamation, threw live batting practice Friday. “He’ll probably go on a rehab assignment next week and he’ll be with us hopefully in September,” said manager Alex Cora. … 1B Mitch Moreland was “banged up a little bit” and out of the lineup. … OF-DH Martinez played right field and will again Saturday before getting two days off (including Monday’s open date).Rays: OF Tommy Pham, who left Tuesday’s game with a dislocated right ring finger, was available off the bench.UP NEXTRHP Rick Porcello (8-4, 2.72 ERA in 14 career starts at Tropicana Field) will go for his 16th win Saturday night against Rays LHP Ryan Yarbrough, who leads all rookies with 12 wins. Yarbrough will be making only his sixth start. The MLB All-Star Game may be a glorified exhibition in the eyes of many observers, but once the players step out of their dugouts and across the white lines, they are playing for their legacy and history. It may not determine home-field advantage in the World Series any longer, but the game's all-time best have helped cement their reputations with starring performances in the All-Star Game, and today's players have a chance to do the same thing.Mike Trout of the Los Angeles Angels already knows this as he has already won the All-Star Game MVP award twice in his career. Since the Angels have only been to the to the postseason once during his tenure (Division Series vs. Kansas City in 2014), this is his best chance to show baseball fans what he can do on a grand scale. His performance can help cement a reputation that many believe makes him the best player in the game and comparable to the legendary Hall of Famer Mickey Mantle on a historical level.National League manager Dave Roberts has a chance to help the National League turn things around in the All-Star Game.Gregory Bull/Associated PressIt's also an opportunity for Houston Astros manager A.J. Hinch and Los Angeles Dodgers manager Dave Roberts to resume their battle. Hinch led the Astros to a seven-game victory over Roberts and the Dodgers in last year's World Series, and they are the managers of their respective leagues in this game. Neither manager wants to make the mistake that costs his league a chance at victory. The game will be played at Nationals Park in Washington, D.C., but the American League is designated as the home team because this is the fourth straight year that a National League city served as the venue for the Midsummer Classic. Two years ago, the American League was the home team even though the game was played in San Diego.2018 MLB All-Star Game InformationDate:Tuesday, July 17Time:8 p.m. ETTV:FoxRostersAmerican LeagueStartersWilson Ramos. Here's how the starting lineups should look for both teams, along with an explanation.American League1. Jose Altuve, 2B2. Mookie Betts, LF3. Mike Trout, CF4. Manny Machado, SS5. Jose Ramirez, 3B6. J.D. Martinez, DH7. Aaron Judge, RF8. Jose Abreu, 1B9. Sal Perez, CChris Sale, PAltuve is a sensational igniter and could get the American League started with a blast, while Betts is a sensational hitter who is having a brilliant year.Trout deserves the position of honor in the No. 3 hole, while Machado can carry any lineup from the No. 4 position.Ramirez is in the No. 5 spot ahead of the slugging Martinez because that allows the switch-hitter to break up the string of right-handed hitters.Judge follows at No. 7, and he is in right field because Betts can make the switch to left field much easier than the Yankees slugger.Abreu is a fine hitter, but it's hard to see him above this spot given the strength of the rest of the lineup. Perez gets the start at catcher because of the Wilson Ramos injury.Sale is a brilliant pitcher who is on one of the best streaks of his career. National League1. Freddie Freeman, 1B2. Nick Markakis, LF3. Javier Baez, 2B4. Nolan Arenado, 3B5. Matt Kemp, RF6. Jesus Aguilar, DH7. Willson Contreras, C8. Bryce Harper, CF9. Brandon CrawfordMax Scherzer, PFreeman gives the National League a professional and classy hitter at the top of the lineup, and his teammate Markakis has been lashing line drives all season. The talented and ego-driven Baez will appreciate his insertion in the No. 3 hole, and he has the best chance of any National Leaguer of leading his team to a victory.Arenado is a powerful clean-up hitter, and the back-to-back placement of Kemp and Aguilar could be formidable.Contreras is likely to be in the NL starting lineup for years to come because he is just coming into his own. Harper is saved the embarrassment of batting last, while Crawford has a chance to make the most of his opportunity.Scherzer will let it fly against the American League stars, and he will hope to register a slew of strikeouts against that powerful lineup.
